All the items outlined above are free. If you have bought a computer within the last ten years running some version of Windows, and are able to use the internet, you already have everything you need to get started.
If you have a Macintosh computer or are not using the windows operating system you will need to use a different Text Editor, such as Simple Text (Mac) or VI (Unix). Any operating system will have some equivalent to the windows Notepad.
If you have trouble locating Notepad on your computer it is usually under this path START BUTTON, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, NOTEPAD.
A text editor can be used to create and edit HTML files
A browser can be used to view or test HTML files
Notepad comes with any version of windows, even the very oldest versions. It hasn't changed in years.
Background
Internet Explorer comes with windows '98 & windows 2000, this is why there was a big court case involving Bill Gates which you may have heard about on the news. Other people offering browser software were unable to compete, by giving away their browser as part of the operating system used by most computers around the world, Microsoft effectively eliminated all competition. Even companies offering free browser products have trouble trying to get people to use them.
There are minor differences with the way documents display using different browsers. No company in the world is yet to produce a browser that adheres to the recommended standards, though Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 comes the closest so far. These small differences can be very frustrating if you pursue this subject in depth, but for the purposes of our discussion and activities, any browser software will do essentially the same job.
